Water is water, right? Well, walk through any supermarket and you might not think so. One thing that can make people uncomfortable is that the label says “distilled water.”
There are many claims online about the health benefits of distilled water. Many suggest that it detoxifies your body. This is where things get dangerous. So let’s take a look at everything you need to know about this variety of water.
What is distilled water?
Simplistically, water is distilled through the following process.
- First, the water boils in the boiling chamber until it finally evaporates into steam.
- Vapor is exhausted from the chamber and rises through vents into a stainless steel condenser, leaving behind microbes, minerals and contaminants.
- The steam condenses and when it reaches the condenser it is cooled by a fan until it turns back into water droplets.
- Before the process is complete, the water is passed through a filtration system to remove any remaining impurities before it drips into a container and is ready for consumption.
If it’s not clear enough, the distillation process is all about removing bad ingredients in water. However, among those removed are essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium. For this reason, it is important to recognize that “pure” does not necessarily mean “better”.
Are there any advantages to drinking distilled water over tap water?
Distilled water often tastes very bland due to the intensive process it undergoes before it reaches your glass. This may or may not be fun for you. At the same time, depending on where you live, distilled water may be a much healthier option than tap water.
Some areas, and the water systems that supply them, can be heavily contaminated with unhealthy chemicals, and most minerals can be obtained from the diet anyway, whereas non-distilled water is used in these areas. Not worth the risk of ingestion.
What should I consider about distilled water?
There is nothing wrong with drinking distilled water. However, if you are a heavy drinker of distilled water, make sure you are consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables. These foods contain fluids and electrolytes that may be lacking from just drinking distilled water. Additionally, consider adding electrolytes to remineralize your water.
These often contain minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sometimes a small amount of zinc. Water acts as a carrier for these minerals required by cells. It’s also important to keep in mind that distilled water, despite its claim to detoxify the body, does not have any obvious special health benefits. Rather, the water is actually less healthy considering the nutrients removed from it by the filtration process. Electrolyte deficiencies can lead to many health problems such as high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats.
Is distilled water different from purified water?
Distilled water is a type of purified water, meaning that the purified water also has contaminants and minerals removed, typically boasting a 99% decontamination rate. A small difference is that purified water may still contain trace amounts of minerals, but distilled water does not. Purified water is not inherently problematic, but drinking only very pure water is still not the best choice, especially if you have a balanced diet and are not rich in minerals. I can’t say
Don’t be afraid of distilled water, but don’t believe that it cures all ailments. Distilled water basically refers to the process done to ultra-purify water. However, “purity” in the case of distillation means that important minerals have been removed, so pure water is not necessarily healthier.
