Researchers now agree that the creative process consists of two sequential phases: generating new ideas and evaluating their feasibility. But they still don’t understand how this evaluation is done and why we end up keeping certain ideas and not others.
“We have to value our ideas and choose the best ones,” says Lopez Percem. “However, there is no indication that this manipulation corresponds to a rational and objective evaluation that would prevent cognitive biases from making the best possible choice. We therefore believe that this value I wanted to know how it is assigned and whether it depends on the individual characteristics. ”
Objectifying the inner movement of flowering ideas
Modeling the creative process as a series of operations involving different brain networks does not correspond to common notions of creativity, which are usually expressed as the momentum that captures, carries, and overtakes us. Conversely, Volle’s team believes that there are three fundamental aspects of creativity that can be modeled using mathematical tools. evaluation. It consists of evaluating the quality of ideas. To understand the interrelationships of these three aspects, the researchers reproduced them in computational models and compared them to the actual behavior of individuals recruited for the study.Via Paris Brain Institute PRISME Platform, 71 participants were invited to take a free association test consisting of matching words in the most daring way possible. They were then asked to rate how much they liked the association of these ideas and whether they were relevant and original.
“Our findings show that subjective evaluation of ideas plays an important role in creativity,” says neurologist Emmanuel Voll. “We have observed a relationship between the rate at which new ideas are generated and the level of evaluation participants have on them. You can come up with ideas faster.Imagine, for example, a chef trying to make a sauce: the more flavor combinations you are attracted to in your mind, the faster you become absorbed in the ingredients. Another finding we found is that this rating combines two subjective criteria: originality and relevance.”
What personal preferences drive creativity?
The research team shows that the importance of these two criteria varies from person to person. “It all depends on the person’s experience, personality, and perhaps environment,” the researchers added. Finally, the team’s model predicted the speed and quality of participants’ creative suggestions based on their preferences measured in an independent task. They also point to the possibility that in the long term we can accurately describe the mechanisms of creativity at the neurocomputational level and associate them with neural substrates, suggesting that creative thinking is a mysterious process that we have no control over. “In the future, we would like to define different creativity profiles related to people’s fields of activity.
