The Blue Zones are the areas where people live the longest and healthiest (identified by his Geographic Fellow at the National and noted author Dan Buttner). Most people in these areas who live well into their 90s and beyond aren’t following the latest diets or running on treadmills in boutique bootcamp studios. They live a balanced lifestyle with an emphasis on fun and pleasure.
“Even if you don’t live in the Blue Zone, adopting these principles can have a huge impact on your health and longevity,” says Proactive Health Labs, a well-known health education nonprofit. Founder Dr. Joy Stevenson-Laws said. She says we can all learn from these Blue Zone practices and incorporate them into our own routines. “By making simple but important lifestyle changes, anyone can be on the road to healthier and potentially longer life,” she says.
Inspired by the Blue Zone, here are four healthy lifestyle habits for longevity. but bits and pieces.
1. Take it easy
Stevenson Rhodes recommends “downshifting”. “Chronic stress can lead to inflammation and various chronic diseases, so manage your stress effectively.”
None of the Blue Zone areas are in big cities. Perhaps there is a correlation between pace of life and health. Maybe it’s a bit of an “island life” mentality. Aside from Loma Linda (a California suburb 90 miles east of Los Angeles) and Costa Rica, her other three Blue Zones are on real islands. Okinawa, Sardinia, and Ikaria are all surrounded by the sea and isolated from the hustle and bustle.
This is not to say that living in the city is doomed, but to point out that a slower pace of life can have health benefits. How can I slow it down? Maybe there’s a promise to say “no” or a way to increase the amount of rest each day.
2. Take advantage of happy hour
If you don’t drink yet, don’t start here. Alcohol as an ingredient has no health benefits. However, Blue Zone communities (with the exception of Loma Linda, which consists mostly of sober Seventh-day Adventists) tend to eat before dinner with friends and family. Enjoy as an aperitif.
So if you enjoy wine, drink it at 5am instead of bingeing at midnight, says Stevenson-Rose. “Reduce your drinking” [can help you] Maintain optimal health and avoid potential negative effects. Plus, there’s a lot to be said for the longevity-promoting benefits of giving yourself rituals that help you de-stress (see above) and find camaraderie and connection.
3. Prioritize your social life
One of the best elements discovered about the Blue Zone lifestyle habits? A sense of social connection. “Belonging is essential,” says Stevenson-Rose. “Whether it’s faith-based service or a positive social network, building a supportive community contributes to longevity.”
Put relationships first, before work and other priorities. By investing time in your family and building friendships, you can develop a sense of support, avoid loneliness, and find greater purpose. “Surround yourself,” says Stevenson Rhodes.
Ask yourself. What can you do this week or now to improve your social health? It may be easier than you think. I might invite someone for a walk. Schedule an update call with a friend. Or introduce yourself to new people in a yoga class.
4. Find happiness
It’s easy to slip into cynicism under the guise of “realism,” but it takes far more courage to choose joy and optimism in the face of obstacles. “Focus on a sense of purpose and a positive attitude” [is a Blue Zone habit]says Stevenson Rose. “This makes a huge contribution to a healthy and happy life.”
